Owls

The owl has historically been revered by some and feared by others. An owl sighting often thrills visitors to Radnor Lake. Similarly, the birds seem to enjoy watching hikers. Owls hunt for mice, snakes, and other small animals in the forests as well as old-field areas. Three abundant species of owl call Radnor Lake home. The Barred Owl, most often sighted, has a round face and bars of brown color on its chest. Eastern Screech Owls and Great Horned Owls both have "horns" or tufts of feathers on their heads. Screech Owls are smaller than a crow and come in two color phases: red phase and gray phase. Eastern Screech and Great Horned Owls are primarily nocturnal, hunting mostly at night. Barred Owls, however, often hunt during the day, thus being spotted regularly by visitors.
