| More than fifteen species of snakes can be found at Radnor Lake,
but only two of them are venomous. Although feared by many, snakes
have an important role in nature as mouse catcher, predator, and sometimes
prey. Hawks, owls, and some other mammals think snakes are a tasty
treat. Although this natural area is highly visited, snake encounters
seldom happen and bites have not occurred. An alert hiker on the trail
can see a snake in time to let it cross the trail and go about its
natural movements. The timber rattlesnake and northern copperhead
for the most part are reclusive and are seldom encountered. |
